US authorities confirmed another shooting in the Washington area Friday, in which one person was wounded.

But it was not clear whether it was related to the recent sniper shootings that have killed seven people and wounded two others in the area since Oct. 2.

Lucy Caldwell, a Virginia state police spokeswoman, said the shooting took place at a gas station near Virginia's Fredericksburg south of Washington at 9:30 a.m. local time. Three of the sniper shootings targeted people filling their cars at gas station.

Police investigating the shooting in Spotsylvania County said they were in an "emergency situation" in the area, closing exits, inspecting vehicles and questioning motorists on I-95. They are looking for a white minivan which was seen leaving the shooting scene.

Meanwhile, a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) team is developing a "graphic aid" to be released to the public that police hope will help capture the elusive sniper or snipers.

Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said investigatorshave received "very helpful" information from witnesses as the hunt for the shooter widens, but gave no hint that authorities areclose to bringing the shootings in the Washington D.C.-area to an end. Six people were killed by the mystery sniper in Montgomery County.

"We're very hopeful that the special projects unit will have that information ready," Moose said. "We'll have that aid as soon as possible and then get it out."

Fear throughout the district has led schools to place restrictions on outdoor and extracurricular activities.
