Jiang, Mandela Talk over Phone

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and former South African President Nelson Mandela discussed China-South African relations in a telephone conversation Friday, according to China's Foreign Ministry.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and former South African President Nelson Mandela discussed China-South African relations in a telephone conversation Friday, according to China's Foreign Ministry.

Extending congratulations on the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mandela said he was pleased with the smooth expansion of relations between South Africa and China.

Jiang said he appreciated the contributions Mandela had made inboosting the ties between China and South Africa.

The two also exchanged views on the Iraq issue, according to the Ministry.
