6 Killed in Bomb Explosion in Kathmandu

At least six people were killed and three others seriously wounded when a powerful explosive device went off at a busy crossroad in Kathmandu Saturday morning,a police officer said.

At least six people were killed and three others seriously wounded when a powerful explosive device went off at a busy crossroad in Kathmandu Saturday morning,a police officer said.

"The explosion occurred about 6 o'clock in the morning at the crossroad near the biggest food market in Kathmandu," a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

"The bomb also destroyed a statue of the last King Mahendra," he said.

The police suspected the bomb was planted by the anti-government guerrillas.

Government security forces and police have already started the investigation into the incident, he added.

The bomb attack coincided with the first day of the Dashain Festival, the most important festival in the Himalayan kingdom, and just hours after Nepali King Gyanendra's newly appointed cabinet led by Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand was sworn inon Friday evening.
