A 46-vehicle pileup on a highway in east China's Anhui Province at 7:30 a.m. Monday has claimed two lives and injured eight.

A source from the provincial highway administration blamed the pileup on low visibility due to a heavy fog, drivers' fatigue and speeding, as well as to some vehicles being overloaded.

The accident occurred on a newly-opened highway from the provincial capital of Hefei to Anqing. Shortly after the accident occurred, police ordered the highway closed to allow the injured to be treated and the road to be cleaned up. At press time, the highway was still closed.

The 46 vehicles involved were all trucks.
