Sixty-one people were arrested for a variety of crimes during an operation at a railway station on the Johannesburg-Pretoria main line, police said on Monday.

Superintendent Eugene Opperman said that among the 61 arrested were two men believed to have been involved in armed robberies on trains. Others were arrested for public drunkenness and for not holding valid tickets.

He said that the police confiscated stolen property, dagga and two firearms.

The operation involved officials from the SA Police Service, metropolitan police, Mertrorail and private security companies.

"Following intelligence gathered by the law enforcement agencies concerning theft, assault, murder and robbery taking place on the commuter trains we planned today's operation in conjunction with the various agencies," he said.

Between 5 pm and 8 pm five commuter trains were searched at the Kaalfontein railway station, which is located about half way between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Most commuters were positive about the police presence and future operations would be held.

South Africa, one of the most dangerous countries in the world, has the highest crime rate due to higher unemployment rate, rampant of firearms and no death sentence to criminals.

There are many reports of armed robberies, hijackings, murders, rapes and door-breaks everyday. Even the armed policemen have turned into victims of criminals.
