Iraq Vows to Fight Against Possible US-led War

Vice Chairman of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council Ezzat Ibrahim Wednesday reiterated Iraq's readiness to fight against a possible US-led war.

Vice Chairman of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council Ezzat Ibrahim Wednesday reiterated Iraq's readiness to fight against a possible US-led war.

Ibrahim told a press conference that "if the Americans violate Iraq's territory, we're ready to fight against them."

"We will fight them in every village and every town. Every Iraqihouse would become a fighting place," he said.

Ibrahim noted that the United States "is dreaming" when it thinks of a "regime change" in Iraq. But "if they try, they will find 25 million Iraqi people fighting them."

Meanwhile, Ibrahim, who is also head of the Committee supervising referendum on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's reelection, announced that all of the 11,445,638 eligible voters across Iraq have turned out and unanimously cast their "yes" vote to Saddam.

The president won 100 percent of votes in the nationwide referendum and his presidential term is thus renewed for another seven years, Ibrahim said, stressing that the Americans would have to face those people who had said "yes" to the Iraqi leader.

The United States and its closest ally Britain, which accuse Iraq of secretly pursuing weapons of mass destruction, have been engaged in a joint diplomatic offensive to push through a new UN Security Council resolution on Iraq's disarmament.

The proposed UN resolution will reportedly set a seven-day deadline for Iraqi president to accept all its demands and then open all suspected sites, including his palaces, to international weapons inspectors.

The tough demands are coupled with a warning that "all necessarymeans", including the use of force, would be applied against Iraq if it fails to come into line.

But Iraq has so far refused to accept any new conditions beyond what it has agreed with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
