By the first half of this year HIV carriers in China rose to nearly 1 million, according to latest statistics released by the Ministry of Public Health.

HIV/AIDS in China showed a trend of fast spread in recent years, the Ministry pointed out. It is estimated that since China reported its first AIDS case in 1985, the number of infected people shot up to 850,000 by the end of last year. The first half of this year saw a 16.7 percent growth infected over the same period of previous year, with the total number near 1 million.

Among China's HIV carriers, 68 percent were infected through drug injection, 9.7 percent from blood and plasma collection, 1.5 percent via blood products, 7.2 percent through sex, 0.2 percent from mother to child and the remaining 13.4 percent from causes unknown, the Ministry said.

According to international standards, China is still at a stage of low epidemic on account of its infection rate. But the situation is by no means optimistic due to China's large population base and the absolute number of carriers infected. By 2010, an enlarged figure to over 10 million is predicted when should no effective measures be taken.
