A Russian Mi-8 military helicopter with 23 people on board crashed Thursday near the Chechen town of Gudermes, the Russian news agencies reported.

Interfax reported that one person was killed and one another was missing after the crash, but latest Itar-tass report said eleven people were killed and six seriously wounded. Both agenciesquoted sources in Chechen law enforcement agencies.

Interfax said the helicopter was carrying 21 Russians police and three crewmembers. It said a mechanic died and another person was missing, while the rest of the people on board were evacuated.

There was no exact information about what caused the crash. Interfax said contact with the aircraft was lost in the early afternoon and it went down in the Terek River when making an emergency landing. But Itar-tass said it crashed into the river after scraping an electricity transmission line with a propeller.
