China's 2nd International Singing Competition, due to start on Oct. 25, would meet the standards of other world-renowned contests such as the Tchaikovsky International Music Competition, Ministry of Culture (MOC) sources said in Beijing on Thursday.

The competition has so far attracted 212 candidates from 18 countries including Romania, the United States, Greece, Germany and Brazil. Among them, 28 Chinese and 52 foreigners will compete at the contest in Beijing.

Apart from Chinese artists, prize-winners from the Tchaikovsky International Music Competition and other world-class competitions will also attend the competition.

The competition's male and female champions will each win 12,000 U.S. dollars, and top-class singers will be invited to attend China's national cultural galas next year, namely, "Meet in Beijing" and "China's International Arts Festival".

The judges for the event will comprise well-known experts from at home and abroad. Chinese music educationalists such as Zhou Xiaoyan and Wu Zuqiang will act as consultants.

The singers will perform more than 800 vocal pieces altogether covering a wide range of composers and subjects. As well as operatic arias, Chinese songs are specifically required. To popularize the vocal arts, the China Performing Arts Agency will offer tickets to teachers, students and elderly people at reduced prices.
