British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said on Thursday that Britain is to undertake detailed analytical work on the implications of US plans for a ballistic missile defense shield, hinting at a more supportive line to the project from London.

In a speech to the House of Commons, Hoon said it was right to recognize the potential contribution of missile defense to a comprehensive strategy to deal with the threat of ballistic missiles.

But he also acknowledged that no request had been made by the United States to use British bases for the so-called "son of star wars" program, to which Britain has so far failed to express a backing.

Hoon's announcement followed the fourth successful interception in a series of seven flight tests conducted by the United States since October 1999 as part of trials for their planned missile defense system.

An intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the state of California was successfully intercepted over the Pacific Ocean in the latest test, the US Defense Department said Monday.
