A Chinese war show commemorating the contribution American pilots made to China's fight against Japanese invaders from 1937 to 1945, opened Thursday in Washington.

"We encourage visitors to come to this historic exhibition and learn the meaning of true heroism," said Lee Hamilton, director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, which hosts the exhibition.

Hamilton said he was deeply impressed by a part of the show illustrating how Chinese civilians risked their lives to rescue American pilots who were forced to make emergency landings during the war.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, a Chinese press officer praised the heroism demonstrated by the American commercial and military pilots who came to help China during its hardest times. He said the Chinese people would not forget their courage and friendship.

"We mustn't forget our friendship," said Li Bing, deputy director of the Information Office of the State Council of China which provided archival pictures and documents for the exhibition.

The war show titled "The Memory of History" is being held fromOct. 17 to Nov. 5 in Washington and then Houston. It precedes a summit meeting later this month between Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his US counterpart George W. Bush, at Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

The Chinese government also announced on Thursday that it has cast a bronze statue with inscriptions written by President Jiang to honor American Captain James R. Fox Jr, who died in China during the war against the Japanese invasion.

He was flying the supply route from northeast India over the Hump of the Himalayan Mountain to China. He and his co-pilot were killed on their return flight from Kunming, southwest of China, toAssam, India, on March 11, 1943.

The statue would be unveiled at the Houston Bush library on Oct.22.
