Sino-Russian trade and economic cooperation have now come to equal their high-profile political relations, said Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji.

Premier Zhu made the remark during a meeting Friday in Beijing with Georgy Plotavchenko, Russian President's representative to the Central Federal District (CFD).

Zhu extended a warm welcome to Plotavchenko, who is leading a large business delegation to attend the 92nd China Export Commodity Fair which opened Tuesday in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong province.

He said the Sino-Russian strategic cooperative partnership, sponsored by the heads of state of the two countries, is playing an increasingly important role in the development of bilateral ties, and the Sino-Russian good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation signed by the two heads of state last year has injected new vitality into the further development of bilateral ties.

In the past one year or so, their cooperation in various fields has progressed vigorously, noted Zhu.

Zhu underlined the importance of the recent seventh Sino-Russian prime ministers' regular meeting during which a series of agreements were reached to accelerate the implementation of several large cooperative projects.

Noting that exchanges between different regions of the two countries are an important component of bilateral relations, Zhu voiced the Chinese government's support for the enhancement of direct exchanges and cooperation between regions of both countries.

He went on to say that such exchanges and cooperation are growing, and expressed his hope that Guangdong and the CFD will continue to expand their cooperation in various fields in the interest of mutual economic development.

Plotavchenko said the rapid development of the mutually beneficial cooperation between the CFD and Guangdong reflects the spirit of the bilateral good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation.

He noted that the CFD in Russia is economically advanced, with strong scientific and technological capabilities, and that there are broad cooperative prospects for the CFD and Guangdong as their economies are highly complementary.

The Russian visitors started their visit to Guangdong on Oct. 14.
