The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday welcomed Russia's proposal for holding tripartite talks on connecting railways between Russia, the DPRK and South Korea.

"We hail this proposal, considering that it will be conductive to successfully carrying out the Korea-Russia railway connection project in the spirit of the DPRK-Russia Moscow Declaration," a DPRK railways ministry spokesman said in a statement released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The idea of connecting inter-Korea and Trans-Siberian railways was initiated in the Moscow Declaration issued during DPRK leader Kim Jong-Il's visit to Russia in August 2001.

Soon after Kim's visit, Russia proposed to hold tripartite talks of railway officials of the DPRK, South Korea and Russia on the connection of the railways. The railway line starts at Hasan in Far East Russia, goes through Wonsan and Kosong county in the DPRK and ends in Yangyang in South Korea.

The groundbreaking ceremonies for linking the railways on the east coast were held in the DPRK and South Korea simultaneously last September, which marked the formal launch of the long-expected project and laid the foundation for the proposed Trans-Siberian railway project.

If successfully completed, the railway project will greatly reduce the cargo-delivery time from South Korea to Europe from some five weeks to 11 days.

The railway project will not only benefit the economic cooperation of the Korean Peninsula and Russia but also help achieve peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole, the DPRK spokesman said.
