China welcomes the decision by India and Pakistan to withdraw troops from their border area, a decision which is conducive to easing tensions between the two countries, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue on Friday in Beijing.

Since the end of 2001, the India-Pakistan tension has aroused great concern in the international community, Zhang said.

As a neighbor of India and Pakistan, China has always maintained that the two sides should refrain from violence, resolve all conflicts through peaceful dialogue and persist in their efforts to achieve this goal, she said.

We sincerely hope the two countries will seize current opportunities to take further measures to ease tensions and resumetalks, so as to promote stability and development in south Asia, she said.

Together with the international community, China will continue to play a significant role in stabilizing the South Asian region, she said.

The Indian and Pakistani governments recently announced a partial withdrawal of their troops stationed in their border areas.
