Hong Kong's pop singer Roman Tam,claimed as the city's music "godfather," died of liver cancer Friday night in Hong Kong. He was 52.

Hong Kong's Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho extended his deep condolences to the family and friends of Roman Tam Saturday, saying "most of us grew up with Roman Tam's many golden hits. We all will miss him."

The pop star had been in and out of the hospital after being told in May 2001 that his disease was terminal and was admitted most recently on Monday at Queen Mary Hospital as his condition worsened.

Born in Southwestern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Tam made his musical debut in 1967 with the group "Roman and the Four Steps" after working as an amusement park security guard and bank employee.

Tam shot to fame in the late 1970s after recording the theme songs to several popular Hong Kong television series. Altogether, he released 56 albums in his three decades of musical career.

Tam was the first Asian to perform at London's Royal Albert Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall.

He was elected Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1983.
