Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Minister Shi Guangsheng held talks Thursday (Oct 17) with European Commissioner for Trade Lamy, reaching a consensus that China and EU should lay more stress on coordination and play a crucial part in the new round of multi-lateral trade negotiations in view of its arduous task and imminent time.

Shi Guangsheng noted that China and EU share common views on many international trade problems, hence two parts should strengthen cooperation in aspects of balancing trade issues and coordinating interests of the developing and developed countries so as to push forward this negotiation round towards fair and just. He said that issues defined in the Doha conference should not be increased, decreased or weakened, and rational demands of most developing countries be taken into full consideration.

Lamy responded that EU and China are both main participants of the new round of trade negotiations. Recent years have witnessed an increased portion in world trade and a growing significant role in eliminating differences between South and North due to China's special international status. Lamy added that EU hopes to strengthen cooperation and coordination with China on the basis of mutual trust in bid to promote the settlement of trade problems within the fixed schedule.
