It is also part of the national highway starting from Shanghai in east China and ending at Ruili of Yunnan.

The new expressway, which is 74.8 km long and cost 2.24 billionyuan (270 million US dollars) to build, is part of Yunnan's efforts to upgrade its road network.

The new road is expected to promote trade and economic ties between southwest China and southeast Asia.
