Premier Zhu Rongji said Monday that China attaches great importance to developing mutually beneficial relations with Spain, and expressed the hope to bring the Sino-Spanish cooperative relations to a higher level.

During his meeting with visiting Spanish Second Deputy Prime Minister and Economic Minister Rodrigo Rato Figaredo, Zhu called him an "old friend of China," and said China appreciates his efforts in promoting Sino-Spanish bilateral relations.

The Spanish second prime minister attended an economic and trade seminar Monday morning. Zhu said such a seminar will be veryhelpful to enhance mutual understanding between entrepreneurs of both countries.

China and Spain have had smooth relations since the forging of formal diplomatic ties between the two countries nearly 30 years ago, and senior leaders of both countries have frequently paid each other visits. And two-way trade between China and Spain have increased annually over the past years.

Rato said he agreed with Zhu's appraisals on bilateral relations. Moreover, he said the Spanish prime minister, the Spanish government and he himself all hope to further enhance cooperation with China in different areas.

Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of full diplomatic relations between the two countries, and that should become an opportunity to advance bilateral relations, Rato said.

Rato said he had visited China for a quite few times over the past several years and witnessed tremendous changes in China. He said he admires China's fast economic growth, which was achieved against the background of a sluggish world economy.

Rato forwarded a letter to Premier Zhu from Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, and conveyed the prime minister's greetings. Zhu also asked him to convey his greetings to the Spanish prime minister upon his return.
