Gerhard Schroeder was formally reelected Tuesday by the federal parliament as German Chancellor for a second four-year term.
Schroeder's Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its junior coalition partner, the Green party, received 305 of the 599 votes cast. He needed at least 302 "yes" votes to be re-elected. There were 292 votes against the coalition and two deputies abstained.
Led by Schroeder, the SDP and the Green party narrowly won a second term in the general election on Sept. 22. The bloc holds 306 seats in the 603-member Bundestag, the lower house of parliament.
Schroeder is due to receive his formal appointment from German President Johannes Rau. Schroeder and his cabinet will be sworn in later on Tuesday.
Schroeder, 58, is the first German chancellor in the post-war era to be elected in the restored Reichstag building in Berlin. Following his 1998 election victory over former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, he was elected in the former Bonn Bundestag and took the oath of office there prior to the government's 1999 move to Berlin.
