Ship with 50 Aboard Sank in Caspian Sea

A merchant ship with about 50 on board sank in the Caspian Sea off Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Tuesday, the Interfax news agency reported.

A merchant ship with about 50 on board sank in the Caspian Sea off Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Tuesday, the Interfax news agency reported.

There was no details on the fate of the passengers and crew. Rescue ships have arrived at the scene, and found one body so far,the Interfax said.

There were about 51 people aboard the ship, Interfax quoted theofficials from Azerbaijan's state oil company as saying.

The ship was carrying 2,000 tonnes of oil.

The Mercury II was on its way from Aktau, Kazakhstan to Baku when it sank. The weather was bad at that time and stormy conditions hampered rescue operations, the Interfax said.
