The United States should drop its hegemonic practice in international affairs and opt for reconciliation and peace, said an article carried Tuesday by Rodong Sinmun, the organ of the Workers' Party of Korea.

Denouncing the United States as an "international gendarme," the article underscored the "highhanded and threatening" practice of US special envoy James Kelly, who was the most senior US official to visit Pyongyang on October 3-5 since former Secretary of State Madeline Albright was here in October 2000.

However, the three-day visit did not bring about any significant improvement in Washington-Pyongyang relations, which were "reversed" after US President George W. Bush, who took officein January 2001, branded the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) as part of an "axis of evil" along with Iran and Iraq, and a "sponsor of terrorism."

Kelly's performance was "a vivid expression of the US imperialists' brigandish and arrogant nature," the article pointedout.

The United States has long voiced its concerns over the DPRK's "nuclear development program, missile sales and conventional arms," which were reportedly the major issues raised during Kelly's visit to Pyongyang.

"If the United States persists in its moves to stifle the DPRK by force, the latter will have no option but to take a tougher counteraction," the article warned.
