At least eight suspected members of the rebel group New People's Army (NPA) attacked a mobile telecommunication transmission site in the central Philippine province of Bohol, police said on Thursday.

Late Wednesday, the rebels disarmed the guard on duty at the transmission site in Loon town and destroyed the communications equipment, the ABS-CBN quoted the local police as saying.

The ruined gears were assets of Globe Telecom, the country's second largest wireless telecom carrier.

The incident was the second time that the NPA had attacked the facilities of the same site, police said. The NPA has also been accused of torching telecom equipment in the province.

The 11,000-strong NPA has been waging rebellion activities nationwide for more than 20 years. The government still conducts "back-channel" peace talks with the NPA after the official negotiations were called off in June last year when two congressmen were allegedly assassinated by NPA elements.
