Fifteen miners have been confirmed dead in Wednesday's coal mine gas explosion in north China's Shanxi Province, while rescuers continue to fight to save 29 others who remain trapped underground.

Most of the deaths were the result of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the rescue team.

Over the past two days, provincial leaders and officials from the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety Supervision have gathered in the Zhujiadian Coal Mine in Zhongyang County, Luliang Prefecture, to supervise the rescue operation.

Over 320 rescue and medical workers are on the scene.

According to one rescue official, the underground damage is "unimaginable." The entire ventilation network has been destroyed, and workers are struggling to repair it. The gas is still quite dense, and some fear that another explosion could take place.

The state-owned coal mine, which employed over 500 miners, commenced operations a year ago.
