Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi launched Thursday the construction of a China-funded highway in western Kenya, which is one of the most important Chinese government assistance projects in Kenya as well as in sub-Sahara Africa.

The 54-km-long highway starts from Kipsigak in Rift Valley Province and ends in Shamakhokho in Western Province, a major farming region of Kenya.

This project was agreed upon between the two governments in 1999. Up to date, the Chinese government has provided three batches of funding for the project amounting to some 1.5 billion shillings (about 18 million US dollars).

Addressing hundreds of residents and government officials in the Kaptumo Business Center in Rift Valley Province, Moi thanked the Chinese government for financing the construction of the road, saying that this project further reflects the cordial relations that exist between the two nations.

He said that China has been supporting the development of Kenyain various ways, and such assistance is true in nature, as China has never interfered with Kenya's internal affairs.

He expressed his belief that such relations will continue to grow to the benefits of the two friendly countries.

Also speaking at the launching ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Du Qiwen said that China and Kenya enjoy cordial and friendly relations, which is best manifested by, among other things, this road project.

"As a developing country, we know only too well the importance of good roads and communication facilities," Du said, adding that he hoped that the road will contribute significantly to the socialand economic development in this region, and bring direct benefitsto the people of local communities.
