UN Security Council Condemns Hostage-taking in Moscow

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution, condemning in the strongest terms the seizure of some 700 hostages in a Moscow theater and demanded their immediate and unconditional release.

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution, condemning in the strongest terms the seizure of some 700 hostages in a Moscow theater and demanded their immediate and unconditional release.

The 15-member council saw "the heinous act" as a threat to international peace and security.

It expressed the deepest sympathy and condolences to the peopleand government of Russia and to the victims of the terrorist attack and their families.

The council urged all states to cooperate with the Russian authorities "to find and bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this terrorist attack."

The council voiced its "reinforced determination to combat all forms of terrorism", in accordance with its responsibilities underthe UN Charter.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan issued a similar statement calling for immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

Forty to 50 Chechen terrorists stormed a theater on Dubrovka Street in downtown Moscow on Wednesday evening and demanded an endto the Chechen war. The hostages are still in the hands of terrorists.
