Chinese and French People Enjoy Profound Friendship: Premier Zhu

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Friday in Beijing with Claudie Haignere, the French minister delegated in charge of research and new technologies in the Ministry of Youth, National Education and Research.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Friday with Claudie Haignere, the French minister delegated in charge of research and new technologies in the Ministry of Youth, National Education and Research.

Zhu said the Chinese and French people have enjoyed a profound friendship. France was the first major Western country to establish diplomatic ties with China, and also the first Western country that signed a science and technology agreement with the Chinese Government, he said.

Recent years have witnessed marked progress in the two countries' cooperation, especially in the field of science and technology, Zhu said.

China is willing to continue multi-level and multi-channel cooperation with France to raise the two countries' friendly relations of cooperation to a new high, Zhu said.

Haignere said her delegation is deeply impressed by the dynamic and open China they saw. She said she hoped bilateral cooperation in all fields can enjoy long-term development.

She also expressed hope the scientific and technological circles of the two countries make concerted efforts in tapping the potential for further cooperation.

Zhu and Haignere exchanged views on a number of major scientific projects of cooperation.

Haignere was here at the invitation of China's Ministry of Science and Technology.
