President Jiang Zemin has sent a congratulatory letter to the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), which held a ceremony on Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Over the past 50 years, and especially since the reform and opening drive was launched, the aerospace university has made important achievements in the modernization of the national defense industry, innovation in science and technology, the development of China's education, and the training of high-quality personnel, Jiang said in the letter.

Other leaders including Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan and Li Lanqing, also sent congratulatory inscriptions or letters to the university to mark the occasion.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, addressed the ceremony, expressing his hope that the BUAA, New China's first institute of higher learning specializing in aerospace, will become one of China's top universities and one known throughout the world.

In 1952, the university was founded with the name "Beijing Aeronautical Engineering Institute." In 1988, the university acquired its present name.

Currently, the BUAA has 17 institutes and six departments, covering a large range of academic fields.

Since its founding, it has trained nearly 80,000 students.
