APEC invests 77.8 Billion Dollars in Mexico from 1994 to 2002

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members invested 77.8 billion US dollars in Mexico during the 1994-2002 period, the Ministry of Economy said Saturday in a communique.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members invested 77.8 billion US dollars in Mexico during the 1994-2002 period, the Ministry of Economy said Saturday in a communique.

The figure represents 75 percent of foreign direct investment (FDI) drawn by the country in the past eight years, according the ministry.

The Group of Experts on Investment was set up by APEC in 1994 to gather officials of the region to regulate its foreign investment, said the communique.

Its task was to advise the Trade and Investment Committee to undertake APEC's targets to liberalize and facilitate trade and investment.

The group also seeks to increase transparency of the APEC economies, promote dialogue within APEC entrepreneurial community,and to set up ties with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other international groups.

Mexico was appointed to preside over the group beginning in thefirst meeting of 2003, according to the ministry.
