China Skaters Win Only One Gold from World Cup Short Track
Chinese women's team retrieved the hosts' glory to claim the title of women's 3,000-meter relay in short track speed skating in 2002 International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup Sunday in Beijing.

This is the first and last gold medal for China during the three-day tournament in which there were 10 golds on offer.

In the Women's 3,000-meter relay, the Chinese team, combined with Yang Yang(A), Wang Chunlu, Wang Meng and Fu Tianyu, beat Canada to claim the title in 4 minutes 17.958 seconds, as China's strongest rival South Korea took the bronze in 4:22.299.

"This is the gold medal that belongs to China before the race,"said Yang Yang, who grabbed two gold medals in the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in February. "Especially when South Koreans tumbled, I knew we would be certain to win the title."

The men's 5,000-meter relay gold medal came to Canada in a time of 6:59.383, while Chinese quadruple Li Ye, Li Haonan, Liu Yingbaoand Li Jiajun tumbled twice during the race and didn't finish the competition.

"Our young female skaters did very well here," said Xin Qingshan, the head coach of Chinese team. "But our male skaters still had a long way to go. They made many mistakes during the race, but they did a better job here today compared with the South Korean stage a week ago."

Choi Eun-kyung of South Korea won the women's 1,000-meter gold when Carta Fabio of Italy took the men's 1,000-meter title, after they claimed the women's and men's 1500 meters titles respectively two days ago.

Choi, who broke the world record of this event in the Salt Lake City Olympics, also won the women's 3,000 meters event with 5:41.563. The men's 3,000-meter victory went to Lee Seung-jae of South Korea in a time of 5:01.767.
