Honda to Expand Cooperation with Chinese Partners

Honda Motor Company, Guangzhou Automobile Group and Dongfeng Automobile Company have announced plans to expand their cooperation in China.

Honda Motor Company, Guangzhou Automobile Group and Dongfeng Automobile Company have announced plans to expand their cooperation in China.

The three parties plan to set up a joint-venture company in Guangzhou to produce automobiles mainly for export. Honda will have a controlling stake in the venture. The plan has been submitted to Chinese authorities for approval, said Koji Kadowaki,chief representative of Honda China.

The new company will produce sedans in China for sale abroad using Honda's global sales network, he said.

Koji said that Honda and Dongfeng have a long-standing cooperative relationship. Dongfeng currently manufactures engines and a few other parts for Guangzhou Honda.

In view of China's huge auto market, Honda will work to develop more models suitable for Chinese consumers and will also introduce more of its popular models to China.

In 1998, Honda Motor and Guangzhou Automobile set up their first joint venture company, Guangzhou Hongda, with each side owning 50 percent of the shares.

According to experts, China is in the process of transforming itself from a car consumption nation to a car production nation, which is permitting a growing number of world-famous auto manufacturers to enter the market.
