China is to take measures to deal with excess silt deposits created by the Three Gorges Projects - determining the success or failure of the project.

Chief engineer of the Yangtze River Water Conservancy Committee, Zheng Shouren, said the reservoir area stores the clear water and discharges the build up in silt during flood season.

Silt discharge methods have been employed through various buildings on the dam. And ecological measures dealing with soil erosion will also help decrease silt disposal.

These measures will allow water to fill more than 90 per cent of the reservoir for 80 to 100 years.
