Four people, including the shooter, were shot dead in a shooting that took place on Monday morning at the University of Arizona in western United States.

At least two professors, both female, were shot dead by a male, who apparently took his own life. Police originally said three people had died. The fourth victim was said to be a college staff member, the NBC TV reported.

The shooting reportedly occurred at the College of Nursing, where the first shots were heard around 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time, when students were taking midterm exams, the reports said.

The nursing college and nearby buildings were later evacuated as anti-riot police team arrived at the scene to make sure the area was safe and to look for any other victims.

Before news of the fourth victim, campus police chief Brian Seastone told NBC's local affiliate KVOA-TV that two people were shot dead and a third died apparently from a self-inflicted wound.

"The (person) with the self-inflicted gun wound appears to be the shooter," he added.

That person, described as a nursing college student in his 40s,reportedly had prior military service.

The shooting took place in front of students, who were later allowed to leave before the gunman apparently took his own life. One student said she thought at first that the incident was a Halloween prank.
