US Congratulates Lula on His Victory in Brazil's Presidential Election

The United States on Monday congratulated Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his landslide victory in the weekend's presidential election in Brazil and said that it looked forward to working with his leftist government.

The United States on Monday congratulated Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his landslide victory in the weekend's presidential election in Brazil and said that it looked forward to working with his leftist government.

"We hope to engage Brazil's new leadership at the earliest opportunity, and work together with president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in forging a prosperous democratic hemisphere based on shared values and mutual respect," the State Department said ina statement.

"The United States and Brazil share many areas of common interest, and we look forward to building a strong partnership with the president-elected and his new administration," the statement said.

Lula, scored a landslide victory in the country's presidential runoff vote on Sunday, handing himself a magnificent 57th birthdaygift.

The former trade union leader garnered 63 percent of the votes in the run-off presidential election, according to the Ibope poll that also showed Jose Serra of the ruling Brazilian Social Democracy Party took 37 percent.
