President of Madagascar to Go to S.Africa for Talks on Island Country

Madagascan President Marc Ravalomanana will go to South Africa on Tuesday for talks on the situation of the Indian Ocean island country, local radio reported on Monday.

Madagascan President Marc Ravalomanana will go to South Africa on Tuesday for talks on the situation of the Indian Ocean island country, local radio reported on Monday.

While staying in South Africa, Ravalomanana is expected to meetwith South African President Thabo Mbeki and some other African leaders.

Meanwhile, according to another report on Monday, Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa and Mozambican President Joaquim Chissanoare also to attend Tuesday's summit.

Ravalomanana, who declared himself head of state of Madagascar after a dispute with former president Didier Ratsiraka over the outcome of election last December, has been refused to be recognized by Mbeki and the African Union (AU).

But he has since been recognized by, among others, the United States, Britain, France and a few African countries.

Ratsiraka, now lives in France.
