Beijing hopes to enhance its ties with African cities, said Beijing Mayor Liu Qi at a meeting here Monday with Elias Mudzuri, mayor of Zimbabwe's capital, Harare.

Liu said China and Zimbabwe had a long history of friendship and he was convinced that Mudzuri's visit was bound to promote friendly exchanges between the two capitals.

He cited the cooperation between the Beijing-based Shougang Corporation and one of Zimbabwe's iron and steel plants, saying Beijing, capitalizing on its hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games, would expand exchanges and cooperation with African cities.

Mudzuri, who is on his first visit to Beijing, said he was convinced the two capitals would enjoy stronger ties.

The two mayors also discussed matters concerning urban housing construction and the development of the market economy.
