A Palestinian militant was shot dead by Israeli troops near the West bank town of Jenin after wounding at least four Israelis, Israel Radio reported.

The incident took place when the militant managed to infiltrate into the Jewish settlement of Haramish near Jenin.

The militant, whose identity has not been recognized yet, entered the settlement and immediately opened fire from his automatic machinegun wounding at least four Israelis.

Two Israeli girls, 13 and 14 years old, were seriously injured while two Israeli soldiers were lightly injured, the radio said, adding all the four were taken to an Israeli hospital for treatment.

It was the second attack on a West Bank settlement in 48 hours. On Sunday a suicide bombing at the large settlement of Ariel killed three Israeli soldiers as well as the bomber.

The conflict between Israeli troops and the Palestinians has been deteriorating since the Palestinian uprising in September 2000.

At least 2,614 people, including 1,935 Palestinians, 630 Israelis and 49 foreigners, have been killed during the past two years of violence.
