A bomb exploded outside a hotel in Narathiwat province, 1,150 kilometers, while 5 railway stations in the province received threats, the Nation Channel reported Wednesday.

The explosion, which occurred at about midnight, damaged 12 glass windows of the hotel lobby room, five motorcycles and a pick-up truck parked nearby.

Provincial police believed that the bomb was planted with a motorcycle, which was left near the hotel and the attackers were the same groups that torched 5 primary schools and a shrine in thesouthern provinces Tuesday morning.

According to the report, the bomb attacks and arson were followed by bomb threats in telephone calls to Sungai Kolok, Sungai Padi, Cho Airong, Tanyongmas and Rueso railway stations in Narathiwat.

About 500 policemen were sent to the five stations but found nothing suspicious.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra condemned the new round of violence as cowardly and rejected any suggestion of international terrorism.

"The people responsible for the attacks are not terrorists. They could be people with interests in illegal businesses such as drugs and crime," he said.

Thaksin also said he believed those responsible for the arson and bomb attacks were not involved in an earlier series of murdersof police officers that shocked Yala and Narathiwat provinces.

Thailand's five southern provinces have in past years been plagued by Muslim separatist violence but most analysts now believe the remnants of the militant groups are not capable of carrying out any major attacks.
