Maltese Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami said Thursday in Beijing that Malta and China need to expand economic cooperation in fields such as marine transportation, finance, tourism and manufacturing.

Adami, who is in China for a six-day official visit at the invitation of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, made the appeal in a speech to a China-Malta economic and trade forum.

Located in the middle of Mediterranean, Malta has traditional close ties with Europe and north Africa, he said, adding that Chinese enterprises could take Malta's geographic advantage for more convenient access to European and north African markets.

Adami said Malta's continued economic growth and export-oriented policies have made it an ideal cooperative partner of Chinese companies in the Mediterranean.

The Maltese government attaches great importance to political and economic relations with China, and is willing to promote bilateral cooperation in the economy, science, technology and culture.

Adami said Malta is expected to join the European Union in 2004and welcomes more investment from China.

Vice-President Wan Jifei of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, said China and Malta enjoy good political and economic relations. There are bright prospects in their cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, science and technology and culture.

Chinese customs figures show that in the first nine months this year, China-Malta trade reached 230 million US dollars, up 105.8 percent from a year earlier. Of the total, China's exports to Malta grew 46.4 percent to 98 million US dollars, and imports from Malta jumped 190.7 percent to 140 million US dollars.
