President Jiang Zemin said Thursday China will join with other members of the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) to actively promote international trade and economic cooperation.

President Jiang made the remark during a meeting with IEC President Sei-ichi Takayanagi, other IEC officials and members of the IEC Council Board in Beijing on Thursday.

The Chinese president congratulated the guests on the convention of the 66th IEC annual meeting in Beijing, saying that as the pace of technological advancement and economic globalization accelerated, the work of international standardization, certification and accreditation had become an indispensable base for the growth of economy, trade, science, technology and industry.

The IEC standards had not only played a vital role in improving the quality of life and promoting international technological cooperation, he said, but also played an active, effective role in eliminating technical barriers of trade.

President Jiang expressed appreciation for the achievements of the IEC.

After joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a developing country, China would cooperate with IEC members to actively promote international trade and cooperation, he noted. China was ready to expand cooperation with the IEC in the fields of standardization, certification and accreditation.

Moreover, China would encourage enterprises to adopt IEC standards and conformity assessments, Jiang said.

The IEC guests said the organization would further strengthen cooperation with China in developing products, technologies and markets in the electric engineering and electronic fields.
