Chinese Minister of National Defense
Chi Haotian
met Thursday with Cicu Salvatore, Italian vice-minister of defense.
Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and state councilor, said China and
Italy
have a longstanding tradition of friendship. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since the forging of diplomatic ties over three decades ago, Chi said, adding that the two countries share the same or similar stance on many international issues and have had fruitful cooperation in a number of areas including the military.
Terrorism constitutes a great threat to world peace and stability, he noted, stressing that China has always been in opposition to terrorism of any form and supports the United Nations' vital role in combating this global menace.
China attaches importance to the crucial role of Italy and the European Union in international affairs and is ready to boost cooperation with Italy in various fields, he added.
Chi said China appreciates the Italian government's adherence to the one-China policy, and there will be great prospects for future cooperation in the new century.
Salvatore said Italy values the relationship with China and his delegation is amazed at the tremendous achievements scored in China's economic construction. He also praised the positive stance and great contributions made by the Chinese government in the struggle against terrorism.
Salvatore hoped to further the exchanges and enhance mutual understanding so as to contribute more to human civilization.
Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) general staff, also met earlier with Cicu Salvatore and his party.
