China Issues Standards for Wooden Flooring

Two sets of standards for wooden flooring which become effective from Nov. 1, are an attempt to tighten controls in the burgeoning house decor materials market, according to sources from a meeting of the China Wood Circulation Association (CWCA) held on Thursday in Beijing.

The criteria for installing and inspecting wooden flooring, issued by the State Economic and Trade Commission, would become important requirements for developing the wooden flooring market, said Gao Zhihua, an CWCA official.

With the rapid growth of China's real estate industry, the market for house decor materials had also mushroomed, said Gao, but consumers' complaints had also increased at a surprising speed. The complaints usually focused on poor quality and lack of good after-sale service, especially in the wooden floor market.

These problems would greatly restrict the development of the market, though it had bright prospects, since Chinese families were likely to spend more on decorating their houses, said Gao.

Some leading overseas companies had also headed for the booming market with their first-class products and service, said the expert adding that Chinese manufacturers and dealers should strive harder to improve their overall competitiveness to face the challenge from abroad.
