Tendering for the redevelopment and running of Hong Kong's former marine police headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, as a tourist attraction opened in Hong Kong Friday.

The 19th century complex, comprising a main building, stables, signal tower and two former fire stations currently being used as a handicraft shop, is one of Hong Kong's oldest Victorian-style buildings.

Interesting developers can submit their proposals and quote a price to lease the site for 50 years until Feb. 7 next year.

The Tourist Commission required that no new houses could be built within the site in keeping with the nature and historical value of the structures.

However, they allowed developers to develop two stories of attractions underground, alongside World War Two tunnels dug by occupying Japanese forces.

The Antiquities and Monuments Offices evaluated that there are about 50 items of the headquarters, such as staircases, door locksand the custody cells which were considered of greatest value.

The headquarters was built in 1883 to guard Hong Kong against pirates. It was left vacant when the Marine police moved to their new base in Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong Island, in November 1996.
