The Yantai Port of Yantai in east China's Shandong province has been twinned with Bremerton Port, located on the west coast of the United States, in a friendship and cooperation pact.

Li Shuqin, deputy mayor of Yantai, said the city government attached great importance to enhancing exchanges and cooperation between Yantai and other domestic and foreign ports and enterprises.

The twinning of Yantai and Bremerton ports would bring more development opportunities for both sides and facilitate contacts and exchanges between Yantai City and the outside world, said Li.

To date, Yantai Port has established ties with the ports of SanDiego, Tampa and Olympia in the United States and Tauranga Port, New Zealand.

Located on the north of the Shandong Peninsula, Yantai Port wasopened as a treaty port in 1861. The port now boasts 38 berths, 19of which are deep water berths that can handle 10,000-ton and heavier ships.

The port operates direct navigation routes to more than 100 ports in over 70 countries and regions. More than 800 foreign ships visit the port annually.
