Macao NPC Deputies Should Embrace 'One Country, Two Systems' Principle: Official

Deputies to be elected to represent Macao at the 10th National People's Congress (NPC) of China should be those who love both Macao and the country, adhere to the Basic Law and embrace the "one country, two systems" principle.

Secretary-General of the NPC Standing Committee He Chunlin made the remarks at the first meeting of the Conference for Electing Deputies of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to the 10th NPC held Saturday in Macao.

He pointed out that the Macao NPC deputies, as members of China's top legislative body, are empowered to participate in the management of state affairs in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws, and to exercise the corresponding powers prescribed in the Basic Law.

In line with the principle of non-interference in the affairs of the SAR government and matters within the framework of high degree of autonomy of the SAR, the Macao SAR deputies to be elected, together with all walks of life in the SAR, shoulder the responsibility of supporting Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah and his government in their efforts of governing according to law so as to maintain Macao's long-term stability and prosperity, He said.

The election of the Macao NPC deputies will be conducted in an "open, fair and just" manner, and in strict accordance with the law, he emphasized.

"The election will be held in strict accordance with the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, the Basic Law of the Macao SAR and the Methods for Electing Deputies of the Macao SAR to the 10th National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China."
