The six-month-old China Netcom Communication Group Corporation launched its affiliate in East China's
Jiangsu
province on Saturday.
Jiangsu Netcom with capital of 500 million yuan will provide both basic and value-added telecommunication services such as fixed phones, multimedia communications on line and the construction of a fiber optic network.
The new China Netcom established in May this year comprises 10 provincial subsidiaries of the former China Telecom in north and northeast China, the former China Netcom and the Jitong Communications Corporation.
China Netcom now holds 30 percent of the national trunk line transmission network assets owned by the former China Telecom.
The China Telecom Corporation, founded at the same time as China Netcom, took over the business of the former China Telecom in 21 provinces and cities in south and northwest China including Jiangsu province, holding 70 percent of the national trunk line transmission network assets.
The two companies are allowed to build and operate local telephone networks in each other's areas.
Jiangsu Netcom planned to invest in telecommunication infrastructure in the province, said its general manager, Li Chao.
The total number of fixed phone and mobile phone users in Jiangsu had topped 30 million by October this year, the country's second highest provincial figure.
Besides China Netcom and China Telecom Corp., a further three companies providing basic telecom services -
China Mobile
,
China Unicom
and China Railcom - also have a foothold in Jiangsu. There are also 236 companies providing value-added telecom services in the province.
