The two-day Fifth Europe Asia Forum, with the theme of "China and Europe amid global competition", concluded at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Saturday.

The forum, jointly sponsored by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA) and the Herbert Quandt Stiftung Foundation of BMW AG, was held in China for the first time.

Politicians, businesspeople, experts and scholars attending the forum from China and European countries discussed challenges facing both regions, economic reform, political and economic collaboration between China and Europe, and other issues.

Delegates said China was facing three major challenges - new problems emerging from its WTO accession, conflicts arising during the development process like the income gap between rural and urban people and different social groups, and the need for balance between economic and political reforms.

Meanwhile European countries were being challenged by labor market and social welfare issues and the drive for European amalgamation, they said.

The delegates considered a stable Sino-European political base had been established with economic and trade links playing a key role in stabilizing and promoting bilateral relations.

The two sides should broaden their mutual understanding and Europe should not judge Chinese issues simply from Western viewpoints and standards, they said.

Participants were optimistic about the bright prospects for Sino-European ties and predicted a wider scope for bilateral cooperation in the future.

The forum was presided over by CPIFA president Mei Zhaorong andHorst Telpschik, president of the German foundation and initiator of the roundtable conference.
