Nine Killed in Russian Military Helicopter Shoot-down

A Russian military helicopter Mi-8 fell in Chechnya on Sunday at around 5 p.m. Moscow time (1400 GMT),the Interfax news agency quoted a Russian military officer as saying.

A Russian military helicopter Mi-8 fell in Chechnya on Sunday at around 5 p.m. Moscow time (1400 GMT),the Interfax news agency quoted a Russian military officer as saying.

Nine servicemen on board the helicopter, including three crew members and six passengers, were killed, Boris Podoprigora, Deputy Commander of the Russian troops in Chechnya, said.

Podoprigora said Chechen militants downed the Mi-8 from a movable air defense rocket launcher positioned "in a ruined five-story building on the outskirts of Grozny."

Col. Stanislav Marzoyev, deputy commander of the 58th army, was among the victims.

This is the second similar tragedy within a week in Chechnya. On October 29, four people were killed as a Russian Mi-8 helicopter was shot down in Chechnya near Khankala, where Russia'smain military base in the region is located.
