Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Monday urged East Asian countries to intensify their cooperation in political and security issues.

In a speech delivered at the six summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK), which opened here Monday afternoon, Zhu said transnational crimes including terrorism have increasingly become a reality facing countries in the region.

He said ASEAN, China, Japan and ROK, or the 10+3 countries, should gradually activate the cooperation in political and security fields.

China's proposal of holding the 10+3 Ministerial Meeting on Combating Transnational Crimes has won the support of all relevantparties, Zhu said.

He announced that China will issue ASEAN leaders the Joint Declaration on Cooperation in the Field of Non-Traditional Security Issues, so as to jointly confront the new challenges facing all East Asian countries.

He cited the bombings that have taken place in Indonesia and the Philippines last month, which he said bear evidence of the fact that terrorism is a serious destabilizing factor threatening regional peace.

The terrorist attacks in the two countries have caused hundredsof casualties, which seriously threatened the life and living of civilian people.

The Chinese premier also urged to strengthen the cooperation mechanism in other fields, such as economy, finance, and the exchange of personnel.

Economic development is the primary task for all countries in East Asia, he said, adding that the 10+3 cooperation should continue to take economic cooperation as its priority, Zhu said.

The ASEAN integration process is an important component of 10+3cooperation, and China will exert its utmost efforts to support the development of ASEAN countries, he said.

He added that China will carry out an overall Asian debt reduction plan to exempt Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar from part or all of their debts to China.
