ASEAN Chairman Announces Agenda Toward Regional Community

Chairman of the 8th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Hun Sen announced Monday an agenda to step up the regional integration for a common prosperity.

Chairman of the 8th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Hun Sen announced Monday an agenda to step up the regional integration for a common prosperity.

At the opening ceremony, Hun Sen outlined the Phnom Penh Agenda:Moving toward a Community of Southeast Asian Nations, which aims to collaborate with the Greater Mekong Subregion program to accelerate ASEAN integration.

The objectives of the initiative also include building ASEAN asa single tourist destination, enhancing ASEAN solidarity for peaceand security, especially in the fight against terrorism, and taking bold steps in sustainable natural resource management.

Leaders participating the summit considered the idea of an ASEAN Economic Community as an end goal for the Roadmap for the Integration of ASEAN and Vision 2020, an initiative the leaders launched at the 7th summit in order to make regional integration the center of ASEAN cooperation, providing a framework for more coherent implementation of the regional integration program.

In a press statement, Hun Sen said, "We have agreed to intensify actions to ensure the integration of the broader Southeast Asian market."

Faster integration will require action on tariffs to allow the new members to gain tariff-free access to the more developed ASEANmarkets by 2003, seven years ahead of the agreed target of 2010, he added.

Hun Sen also stressed the importance of harmonized product standards and streamlining customs procedures.
