Chinese Premier Leaves Cambodia for Home

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji left Phnom Penh Monday for home after he wound up an official visit to Cambodia and attended East Asian leaders meetings in the Cambodian capital.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji left Phnom Penh Monday for home after he wound up an official visit to Cambodia and attended East Asian leaders meetings in the Cambodian capital.

Zhu, who arrived in Phnom Penh Friday, held separate talks with Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk, Prime Minister Hun Sen, CambodianSenate President Chea Sim and President of the Cambodian National Assembly Norodom Ranarith on further promoting the friendship and cooperation between China and Cambodia.

During Zhu's official visit to Cambodia, China announced writing off all matured debts of Cambodia owed to China.

China also signed with the Cambodian side a number of agreements on China's provision of aid to Cambodia.

Premier Zhu told Cambodian leaders that China attaches much importance to its traditional friendship with Cambodia, and that it will remain committed to developing a more stable and closer Sino-Cambodian relationship of cooperation.

Zhu also attended the first Greater Mekong Subregional (GMS) summit that opened here on Nov. 3.

In a key note speech delivered at the GMS summit, Zhu urged the countries bordering the Mekong river, which are all developing ones with relatively underdeveloped economies, to enhance their economic cooperation, so as to bring out their respective advantages and accelerate their economic growth.

On the sideline of the 8th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was concluded here Monday after a day-long session, Zhu held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and South Korean Prime Minister Kim SukSoo on enhancing cooperation among the three countries as well as their cooperation with ASEAN members.

Zhu also attended the meeting between ASEAN on one hand and China, Japan and South Korea on the other, or the 10+3 meeting, onhow to intensify the cooperation between them.
